Colmar and Strasbourg

Please send me recommendations on places to stay in Colmar and Strasbourg, and also recommendations on cafes/ restaurants, and things on the must-do list. I won't have a car. I plan to travel by train. I tend to prefer to have affordable places to stay (not into 4-star places), although a private bathroom would be nice. Thanks! Rod

We stayed at Maison Jund when we were there in 2002. We had a double room with its own bathroom and a kitchenette (sink, small fridge, coffee maker, 2-burner stove), plus a sitting area and a TV. The room did not include breakfast, but there's a bakery just up the road. The family who owns it is very nice, and they also make their own wine, which they sell on the premises. The website is www.martinjund.com. Rooms run about 45 euro.

We ate at the Winstub Schwendi, which has Swiss food, and the Creperie Tom Pouce. All of this stuff we found in Rick's book.

We stayed at Maison des Tetes in Colmar and really loved it although it is not inexpensive. Colmar is small enough that you won't need a car.

We stayed at Hotel Saint Martin in Colmar, which was very nice and affordable. The room was a bit small but was clean and comfortable. It was easy getting around Colmar on foot and the town itself is very nice to explore. We ate at a wonderful little restaurant that had authentic Alsatian cuisine and looked around town enjoying the canals and half-timber architecture. I think you will like it.

I can't recommend a place to stay in Strasbourg, but I can tell you where NOT to stay. Avoid the Hostel Rene Cassin. The place is surrounded by an 8 foot high Fence topped by Barbed Wire. The facilities are dirty and at the time we were there, the lights were only working sometimes, and the water was off for 4 hours. I know that won't help you find a place, but hopefully you will avoid the "worst place" we stayed.

We were in Colmar in September of this year and stayed at Chez Leslie. Leslie and her family were fabulous, rooms were lovely and it was only a 15 minute walk to downtown in a quiet little neighbourhood. rooms were not expensive and I would highly recommend staying there.
