My wife and I will be going back to Germany this November and are thanking about visiting across the border in Colmar and the immediate area. Our trip should take us from Baden-Baden into France and back into the Rhine region. Is it worth the effort?
Yes, Colmar is beautiful, the food and atmosphere is great in Alsace. Also visit Strasbourg and take a bateaux mouche ride...
Dear Jim,
congratulations you are on the right track. Colmar is beautful, Baden-Baden is even nicer. They have 19th century 'Belle Epoque' buildings, Michelin star restaurants and thermal bath dating back to the romans. Go to the Friedrichsbad and forget the world. Daily concerts by the Baden Sinfonie played at the Concert Bowl in the Kurgarten will make you not to leave this place.
Going to Colmar, take the B 500 (Schwarzwaldhochstrasse) one of the nicest roads in all of Germany.
Maybe it's just me (I sense I'm swimming against the tide here), but I found Colmar to be a big disappointment. Very touristy, and swimming with shops that you would find in your average mall in the U.S. (it's become a running joke between my partner and me, when we see a Claire's store, to say, "look honey, it's like being back in Colmar!") We did enjoy some of the tiny towns nearby for wine tasting (such as Eguisheim), but Colmar was a real letdown for us. Just a word to the wise. YMMV :)
