Is this worth the time? We are staying in Sarlat for 4 days and thought we could do a day trip. We will have a car, and driving 3-4 hours...no problem

And if you are there, why not visit one of the cognac houses for a tour. Quite interesting

yes it's a good area to visit on a day trip. plan to visit a few villages/castles, and if lucky you can hit a farmer's market with fresh food/wine. road is very easy to navigate, it always pass through the center of small towns. narrow roads but you won't see much traffic.
