My wife and I are leaving for Europe next week, and will be spending about 6 days in Paris. I had thought that it might be nice to have dinner at the restaurant on the Eiffel Tower, but I find that it costs about $150 per person, and that the food is really not that good.
What about going there for coffee & dessert only (maybe with a glass of sherry to go along with it)? Is that a possibility, or does one have to order a full meal?
"They won't reserve you a table for desert only."
You do not specify what you're going to eat when you make a reservation. However, they will make you feel like a bum if you try it. The custom in most of europe is that, when you reserve a table, that table is yours for as long as you want to stay. They figure you will want that table for a good while and won't schedule anybody else accoringly. That said, they want to make some money off you in those hours -- coffee and cookies doesn't pay the overhead. I've never seen or heard of anybody doing what you propose.
"Food is okay, but not for the money."
The joint sports a one-star Michelin rating, which ain't that shabby. If you've never eaten in a Michelin-starred restaurant, this would be a heck of a place to start.
Ciel de Paris, in the Montparnasse Tower, is less expensive and has a better view since it includes the ET.
