clothing to take to Madrid, Spain in April around Easter

Are jeans okay to wear? Do I need to take a dress or skirt? Are capri pants okay? What about sandals? I keep reading conflicting views about how to dress. Thanks!

Hi Gretchen. Think of it the same as if you were going to any large American city; you will see every possbile range of dress; wear whatever you think you will be comfortable in. Enjoyo your trip!

Hello, Are walking shoes ( white ) OK to take and use for Spain trip. My friends tell me to use leather shoes as they are more "formal" especially since Ima going there during the Semana Santa ( holy week) T-shirts ok... or do I need formal shirts for churches/prcession watching? Thoughts/advice please?

dress comfortably where ever you go. if you visit a church, make sure you knees and shoulders are covered, that's all. you realize however formal you dress, you won't out do the locals - they do their after dinner walks in suit and tie, so it's fully expected you in your jeans and whatever make you comfortable, and just enough to be respectful. in fact, only older folks really dress up, so you want to look old dress up.

It should still be relatively cool in Madrid during Easter week unless we have an odd heat-wave WHICH COULD HAPPEN! Bring a light jacket and maybe even a thin sweater to carry around for the cool mornings and evenings. Feel free to bring sandals but I doubt you'll wear/need them. We won't see people wearing sandals in Madrid until June, probably. Bring one skirt, maybe, if we do have a mild heat-wave. Jeans are perfectly okay. Women's jeans, worn by Spanish/European women, tend to be very form-fitting and worn with boots, leather shoes, flats, or even high-heals! You'll rarely see jeans worn with tennis shoes (white or otherwise) by women older than 20 years old. Check the weather websites a couple days before arriving. Right now, the 10-day weather forecast for Madrid at http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/SPXX0050 shows the "Jueves Santo" - the Holy Thursday before Easter Sunday - to be 61ºF for a high and 40ºF for a low - but sunny. This forecast could change, of course. Saludos, MadridMan @ you-know-where!

I was in Madrid last Easter (2010) - being a male, I did not consider the dress or skirt. :-) I did wear slacks and a sport coat (even with tie I believe) to the church service at Cathedral Alumedena next to the Royal Place...Defintely a highlight of the three weeks I was there. Arrived early as I did not know the time, was able to get a fantastic seat. The service was magnificent, especially the organ and the choir singing the Halleluijah Chorus (in Spanish of course!) midway through. Others (locals) there were dressed very "up" or very casual - more to the casual side I would guess. Just dress casually and comfortable. As for shoes, I had on my "dress" crocs which I wear all the time.

it looks like it is quite warm there now (around 25?) but cooling off as we get towards Easter. All I know is I was last in Madrid in May, 1998 and I froze! I had to go shopping for a new jacket. ;)
