Hello! My wife and I are doing the Berlin/Prague/Vienna trip in mid/late June and need to schedule a flight from the US to Berlin. We are getting mixed messages online as to whether Berlin's Tegel airport will still be open then. Delta's website says it will close in March, other sites say it has been pushed back to June, and quite a few say now it will be open until Oct 2013. Hate to book a flight to a closed airport :) ! Any information the Rick Steve's community has would be most welcome...thanks!
I would not be concerned. They will not close Tegel airport until they open new Berlin Brandenburg airport which was postponed already several times. So if it happens before you fly you will land instead in the futuristic Berlin Brandenburg airport. But I doubt that it will happen that soon.
Lola is right. Don't worry about it. The latest reports say the airport won't open until 2014 or 2015. But even when it does eventually open, the new Brandenburg airport will replace the other two. I had the opposite situation last year. I booked a flight from Brandenburg (it was supposed to be ready in June 2012). The opening was cancelled and instead my flight departed from Tegel. There was nothing that I needed to do. The airline automatically updated my ticket.
Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXF) will be open and operating as usual until at least 2015. That's confirmed.
