City Day Pass

We will be doing travels through Amsterdam, Switzerland and Germany this fall. Have seen that many larger cities offer a 1 day, 2 day, etc. pass that includes all transportation systems, reduced rates to museums, etc. Do you think it makes sense to purchase these or not?

For the Iamsterdam card you'll have to do the math. As the card includes a transit pass, you'll have to use the trams enough to justify the cost. My last visit to Amsterdam last month I was with my 72 year-old mother so we used the trams extensively, and saved a lot of money with the free admissions/canal cruise and a few of the 25% discounts. But if you'll be doing a lot of walking it may not be cost effective. Do a rough itinerary of the sites you'll likely to be visiting and add-in how many trams rides you'll be likely to take @ 2 euros per ride. For Switzerland the various Swiss Passes (click the "railpasses" tab above for more info) include free entry to most all museums throughout the country, and includes municipal transport. There are also city passes available, but most hotels in Swiss cities give their guests a free city transit card for the duration of their stay so a city specific pass usually isn't a good deal.

I was under the impression that Munich had discontinued their city ticket, that included admissions (see update, below), but they have an all day ticket (Innenraum Partner Tageskarte) for €9,80 that gives you (5P, total) unlimited use for a day of all conveyances of the MVV in the inner zone of Munich. The inner zone of Munich includes everything people normal see in Munich, except Dachau. To go to Dachau, by S-Bahn and bus, you'll need a Munich XXL Partner Tageskarte for €12,80. A three day innerzone pass for 5 people is €22,80. No, it looks like they still have a City card. The transportation Tageskarten are definitely worth it. Usually, for a single person, one round trip will pay for itself, and the Partner Tageskarte, for 2 to 5, is less than twice a single Tageskarte. The City Ticket seems to cost only a little more, but you would have to read the list of admissions to see if it is worth it (for instance, the art museums, Pinokotheke) are not included)
