I'm in the midst of planning my 3-week trip. We're going from Rome to Cinque Terre, Vernazza. I'm wondering if anyone had some advice of how to get from Vernazza to Interlaken, where we'll be setting up in Lauterbunnen for a few days. Any help on the eurail best train route would be appreciated. By the way we have a Eurail Global Pass, how would this effect the price of the train tickets?
There is really little choice on the route. From Vernazza to Interlaken, you will go via Genoa, Milan, Spiez and then Interlaken. Expect up to 4 train changes. Expect to pay a 5Euro reservation fee on any EuroCity, ICPlus or Cisalpino train that you are on.
Also, as a side note, if you choose to go into the Lauterbrunnen Valley from the Interlaken Ost train station to visit any of the towns, villages and mountain tops, your Eurail Global Pass will only get you a 25% discount off the normal train and gondola fares. You get no discount on any bus runs inside the valley.
Head over to the Swiss Rail website www.sbb.ch/en, type Vernazza and Interlaken in to the boxes and you will get complete details of the route. It take a about 7 hours with four changes.
I am traveling from Interlaken to Milan in September, and my guess is that you would have to take a train from CT to Milan and then from there to Interlaken. Its about 3 hours via train from Milan.
