hi Don, we've stayed at Locanda il Maestrale in Monterosso in 2005 and 2007 and will hopefully stay there again. In 2002 we stayed at Trattoria Gianni in Vernazza which was fantastic as well though not as fancy and expensive as il Maestrale.

Vernazza is small and quiet, a good place to relax. Monterosso is bigger with a beach and I believe some nightlife. Pick the one that suits you best.

I know this isn't what your plan is...but in case you need to go to plan b....

we used Santa Margherita Ligure for our home base and it worked out perfect as we also did day trips to Portofino and Genoa. We stayed at the Hotel Jolanda.

We stayed in Monterosso last year as our base to explore the Cinque Terre. I recommend it- and you MUST stay at Hotel Villa Steno. We liked staying in Monterosso since we had lots of choices to eat at night etc. One night we did have dinner in Vernazza. The best food we had our whole trip to Italy was at Via Venti in Monterosso. AVOID Ciak like the plague! We were warned by locals NOT to go there and we did anyway since Rick Steves recommended it (all his other picks were right on). The service was HORRIBLE, food was terrible- the waiter practically threw our plates at us- and then dumped an entire glass of wine on my husband (because he litterally threw his plate down) and didn't even apologize! He just stared at us and walked away! We should have listened to the locals- We went to Via Venti twice and loved it.

We just got back from 2 nights in the CT and stayed at Locanda il Maestrale. I recommend it highly. It was a Good value and breakfast was very good. Monterossa is a good base especially in February when many places to eat are closed in the winter. We went by train to Riomaggiore and hiked the trails. We ate at CIAK and it was good(especially the anchovy starter platter for 19 Euros was good and provided a sampling of 8 different dishes. The gnocki with pesto was very good also, and a serving is enough for 2 people. We also really liked BELEVEDERE which is near the water. The food was very good, and I really liked the stuffed anchovy. MIKY was closed.
