Churches,Cathedrals and scarves in Spain/Portugal

When visiting churches and cathedrals in Spain and Portugal, are you required to wear a scarf or other covering? What are the requirements concerning shorts, etc. for the same places? I want to be prepared. Stephanie Loveland OH

We went to Mass in Madrid and I wore khaki pants and a blouse. No scarf.... although I did end up buying a bunch because they were so pretty!

I wouldn't wear shorts in the church, particularly if its Sunday. I would stick to shorts for everyday tourist sightseeing and wear pants, skirts or even capris for the church... to me, its more respectful.

The scarf hasn't been required for some years now. I'm not sure whether the shorts restriction varies from church to church, is actually a restriction, or is just a matter of common respect. In any event, I wouldn't bother with the "risk". On church days, leave your shorts at home (Now there's an ad campaign that would get people flocking to the Vatican.) and wear either a long skirt or pants.
