Christmas & New Years in Europe

Hello everyone. Our family of 4 will be in Krakow for Christmas and Paris for New Years Eve (staying in Monmatre. Would love any suggestions on where to eat (restaurants open for christmas eve or day and new years eve) and things to do. We will also be visiting the rhine and Mosel area. We are from Australia and have not travelled to europe in winter before so are interested in weather and clothing suggestions. Thank you Kathy

We were in Paris for NYE last year and most restaurants were open.

Clothing - it was VERY cold last winter and I was not quite prepared for it. I looked at the average temps and packed for those conditions. A lot of people recommend layering your clothes, so that is what I did. For winter travel next time I think I would bring a longer (above the knees) down coat with a hood. That would keep me warm outside, but I wouldn't have to remove 5 layers inside. You can only take off just so many clothes indoors! Bring warm gloves, a hat, warm socks (wool?), silk or some other thin thermals, and a warm scarf.

We had snow in Paris on NY day. Best plan for a very cold visit.

Krakow will likely be significantly colder than Paris. Last year was a notable exception, but it usually isn't particularly cold in Paris during the winter. Two years ago in Paris for Christmas, I found a sweater and jacket, supplemented with a scarf, more than adequate.

Paris is not always as cold as it was last year but depending on where you are from in Australia and if you're used to dry air, you may find Paris is cold anyway because it is very humid. You will most probably have rain. Krakow should be much colder than Paris and you may find snow there. In any case, I'd advise you pack some light but warm sweaters, something for the rain, and scarves and gloves.
