Christmas Markets - Germany and Austria

I leave the day after Thanksgiving for a week visiting the Christmas markets. It is a pkg. tour that includes Munich, Salzburg, Nuremberg, and Vienna. Does anyone have any non-typical spots that you would recommend in any of these places. I'll have some free time and don't think I'll be shopping the WHOLE TIME.
Thanks

Hi Frances, We were in Salzburg for the Christmas markets last November. No need to "shop the whole time". There are a number of markets in Salzburg. All are wonderful. Besides shopping, get a mug of hot wine or hot chocolate, walk around, take in the sights and enjoy the incredible "Christmas" atmosphere. It's an amazing place at this time of year. We've been 4 times previously (in Sept. and Oct.) but during this time of year, it's simply an incredibly beautiful place to be. Be sure to go up to Festung Hohensalzburg for great views. The markets really come alive in the evening with all the lights. Oh, be prepared for the cold. http://www.salzburg-burgen.at/en/hohensalzburg Paul

In Salzburg, just around from the Markt near the Cathedral, there is a famous Chocolatier (not famous enough for me to remember the name right now ;-), but PM and I'll look it up if you want it.) near an Ice rink. We got some Hot Chocolate, then walked over the rink to watch the little kids trying to skate. It was very festive and great fun. I also agree with Paul, the views from the Festung are amazing!
As far as a non-typical spot in Nurnberg (VERY non-typical, non-festive, somewhat depressing, but incredibly powerful), we visited the Nazi Rallying Grounds outside of town. Even my wife, who is NOT a history person, was blown away by it's power. Not feel good by any means, but I'd hate to miss it with you being that close.

Darren do you mean Demel, the exquisite Viennese coffee house?

I second the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. We visited them last year when we were in Nuremberg over Christmas.

In Salzburg, the wonderful chocolate is found at Demel right on the square next to the ice rink. There is also a Demel chocolatier in Vienna. You should also sample the "nockerlin" which is a dessert only served in Salzburg - YUM!! You can find it at several restaurants. In Munich, if you have time, check out Dallmayr at 14 Dienerstrasse. Have fun!!

Hi, In Vienna I'll suggest a place for lunch where good, cheap food, especially if you get that craving for Schnitzel, can be had. The restaurant is " Zu den 2 Lieserln" located at Burggasse 63, 1070 Wien. Tel. #: 1-52 33 282. It's about a 30-40 mins walk from the west train station (Westbahnhof). I went there for lunch upon a recommendation in the Westbahnhof area..well worth it.
