Looking at 2 Viking River Cruises One does half their stops in Germany and the rest of the stops are in Austria and one stop in Bratislava. The other cruise only stops in Passau Germany and the rest of the stops are in Austria. Would Austria have as good a Christmas Market as Germany?
A Christmas cruise is a wonderful way to experience the holidays in Europe. I have been on 2 and am going again this year. The larger the city, the better the market. Nuremburg has the largest and best market. Where are you getting on the ship at? And getting off at? We did stop at Passau, but it was only a stop to get off the ship and then travel by bus to Salzburg, we rejoined the ship in Linz. The smaller cities do have markets and they are usually very lively. They just have less booths then the larger cities. Vienna has a very good market along with Budapest. I have travelled on AMA Waterways for our cruises. Never been on Viking, but believe they all offer similiar cruises. Let me know if you need any specific information on different cities.
The Romantic Danube Starts in Budapest for 1 1/2 days then Vienna, Melk, Passau, Regensburg (Kelheim), Main-Danube Canal, Nuremberg. Danube Waltz: Starts in Passau for 1 1/2 days, then to Linz, Melk & Krems, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest. Which one do you think would be better Thank you for your help.
What is the timing of those cruises? We've seen a poster who booked a "Christmas Market" trip with Viking which didn't start till Christmas - when the markets have already closed down.
The first one goes to Nurnberg which is the largest and considered the best market. Also depends on what else you might want to see in the city you are visiting.
I agree the first cruise sounds better. Budapest to Nuremberg. That is the same itenery we went on before. If you are interested in good markets, Nuremberg is the best. Vienna and Budapest have good markets too. The other cities all have markets too. The river cruises usually include the tours. These cities all offer a lot to see. When we did this trip, it snowed every day. I'm from Texas, so the snow made the trip extra special.
