My family and I plan on spending Christmas in Vienna. We will be spending about a weeek in Rome before and are flying out of Rome back to the States. Wondering about where to stay during the Christmas season and not get pulled into tourist traps? Also any thigns that are must sees/dos during this time, places to eat, or any other tips? Looking forward to the trip!!
Hi Lauren,
... recommend you "Google" Hôtel Graben for information. It is not a tourist trap. Locally, ask directions (it's easy walking distance) to Esterhazy Keller (just off Naglergasse -Nagler Lane-). That's an economical place to enjoy Christmas cheer as folks have already for centuries. Also within walking distance from Graben hotel is the Christ Child Market of Vienna {Wiener Kristkindlmarkt), always worth your while. Otherwise, Google 'Vienna Sightseeing' for general information. Gute Reise! P
Lauren,
Tripadvisor has a Vienna forum with a great deal of information about the holidays in Vienna. There are 3 or 4 regular posters on the forum from Vienna. They have some interesting suggestions about rooms, districts, etc.
Good luck, Gary
Well, New Year's in Vienna is wonderful. I don't know if you're too late for tickets, but there are wonderful concerts and dances. I don't have a lot of info as I've never had the opportunity to even think of going at that time. Here's a website.http://www.viennaticket.com/english/specialevents.html?gclid=CNGf7b6O9ZQCFRdinAodK3NPqQ While it's an event, it strikes me as a bit beyond tourist. Practice waltz steps. ; ) If you don't want to risk your toes then you might look into the New Year's Concert that occurs on New Year's day. You can check it out on Wikipedia and on YouTube!
We stayed at Pension Hargita. While it had everything in our small room, including a shower and bathroom right outside the door, and everyone was helpful, it was noisy. I wouldn't recommend it.
