Visiting new in-laws south of Bordeaux this Christmas, thinking about the Dordogne for days on our own. Any good suggestions for lodging, and, what will be closed during the holidays? They live in Sauveterre de Guyenne and we will be there 12/23-25.
Katie, I see that there hasn't been much response, so I'll give it a try. Have been to the area only once, primarily to see the cave paintings. Stayed in Sarlat which is a nice town and central to tour the area. However, from what I read, the area is mostly known for outdoor activities such as canoeing. Don't know how much time you have spent, or have allocated on this trip, in Paris. But, if you are not "Parised out", I would suggest spending excess time there. Another winter alternative, if you like winter scenery/sports, would be the French alps; someplace like Chamonix.
The countryside can be dead as a doorknob in winter. You need to check the Michelin Red guidebook to see which hotels and restaurants are open in that area that time of year. A lot close for vacations around that time. If your in-laws live in the area, your spouse must know the drill.
