Please suggest any sights, concerts or MUST DO things for Christmas/New Year in Paris. Not a lot in the guide books and so I need help from savvy people who have been there during this holiday.
When I was there last year, there weren't that many events that seemed Christmas-specific. However, the decor everywhere was wonderful... which coming from America, was a nice change. No giant inflatable snow globes here, just smartly stylish elegance. There's also sort of fair at the Place de la Concorde. In case you don't get enough aerial views of the city from the Eiffel Tower, Arch de Triomphe or steps of Sacre Coeur, there's a large ferris wheel. Finally, some of the neighborhoods (like Rue Cler) host Christmas markets. Not as impressive as the better known markets in Germany and Austria, but still pretty nice.
A friend and I found ourselves on the Eiffel Tower on Christmas morning along with any number of travelers from all around the world. That, in itself, was wonderful! But what made it even more special was that the ice-skating rink was open! So, along with our "family of man", we skated, fell, laughed, and offered to take photos of each other--with hand gestures and simply language. It was unforgettable! That and a walk along the Champs Elyses as the sun set and the lights came on made for a fabulous Christmas!
