Christmas in Paris--sounds cold

Have the opportunity to spend between 7-10 days in Paris ...Might be able to overlap both holidays which sounds like a lot of fun. Will have a family of 4 (older kids) and have already found good apt. choices in ard. #5 (Latin district) near Notre Dame. Many have told me that "walking" in Paris is fabulous--lots to see and take in..but @ the end of Dec?? Walking around sounds brutal. What is a good amount of time to spend in Paris for first time visitors. I have a friend who (1st time visitor, too)will have been there starting in Sept '08--studying. He'll be a reasonably-good guide and all, but I'm trying to figure out an general itinerary that can limit the walking. Am I being too cautious? Any thoughts? Sorry for the ramblin' :-)

Georges from Chicago

PS-I know it's cold here too and I know lots of walking in the windy city can give you a winter-wind burn too!

If you were from San Diego, it would be eskimo parka weather. From Chicago, maybe short sleeves? Remember to keep your shoulders and knees covered when you tour the churches. LOL.

Georges,

The ONLY times I have been to Paris have been around Christmas and New Year's. It isn't bitter, bitter cold and the BEST news is that it isn't super crowded, either. I was perfectly comfortable in the park at the Eiffel Tower at midnight, New Year's eve (well, except for the idiots throwing firecrackers at passersby). Don't worry about walking--it really shouldn't be too bad and there is always the Metro for the days when it gets too chilly.

I have visited Paris twice in January and loved it. I had a good warm coat, and walked around everywhere, just like all the locals. If you are from Chicago, I don't think you will have a problem. Being there at Christmastime should be fabulous, and the amount of time you plan sounds great.

My husband, daughter and I will be there for 10 nights over New Year's. I have rented an apartment in the 5th (Latin Quarter) because so much is walkable from there. The more you walk, the more you see. If you take the metro everywhere you will miss out on so much. My first visit we stayed 5 nights in the Rue Cler area. Although it was very nice there, it was not possible to walk to so many things. I am looking forward to having plenty of time too. I think the longer you can stay the better. There is so much to see and do, and you want to allow yourself time to just enjoy being there. I am not from a cold weather area, so I hope we can deal with the cold...:)

I was in Paris in December and being from Nebraska, I know cold and wind! Paris was great compared to the 15 degrees back home! It was in the 40s most days and only rained a bit. I had a heavy wool coat, scarf, and gloves and was very comfortable. Take an umbrella with you just in case.

We walked everywhere - I highly recommend it!! For a first-timer I'd give Paris at least 5 days, not including any daytrips to Versailles, etc. The 5th is my favorite part of Paris (if I had to pick one) - great choice!

Let me add to the chorus. I was there last Christmas, and although the weather was not warm, it wasn't even close to a Chicago winter. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find the weather tolerable.
