Can anyone tell us where the main Christmas markets are in Munich and what general area we should be looking for a close by hotel. Any hotel suggestions? Thanks
We spent last Christmas in Munich. The main market is around the main square - Marienhof. There are other specialized markets in the neighborhoods. We attended one that featured only local handcrafted items. These are located near a tram/subway exit and easy to get to via public transit. You can get a list from the TI on the square. We stayed in an apartment near the train station just for the convenience of transportation. The markets started breaking down around 3/4 pm on Christmas eve and were surprisingly gone by Christmas day. The beer halls were open and packed on Christmas day.
Is Marianhauf what is called the city center? Is it also the place where the glockinspeal is located?
That is where the Glockenspiel is located, but I think the official name is Marienplatz (at least that is what MVV (Munich metro) calls the station.
The main Christmas market is at Marienplatz - in front of the Rathaus (townhall). There is also Tollwood and the Midevil markets - different themes, but all very nice.
The Marienplatz is the main market. We have stayed two times at Hotel Exquisit. Very nice and within walking distance to the center. There is also an underground stop just down the street (very close) to the hotel that will take you into the center in 5 minutes. We loved their breakfast! Their two story room is fabulous. Look them up on the web. Well worth your time. Enjoy...who knows, we might see you there!
