We'll be in the Nuremberg area for 5 days over Christmas with our college-age son. Suggestions on where to spend our time--perhaps renting a car and going to Munich, Garmish, Rothenburg? What to expect/do on Christmas?
Christmas in Germany for a tourist is probably best spent in one of the resorts that will offer you a package deal that includes Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas day activities, like sled rides, etc. Everything shuts down on the 24th, about 1400, to include all restaurants and stores, but not public transportation, though this will be on a slower, holiday schedule. Most Christmas markets have closed on the 22nd-23rd, tho a few are open later. Check the individual cities to see. Museums and tourist attractions will also not be open on the 24th, and may or may not be open on the 25th and 26th as these are also official German holidays with all stores closed. If you want to visit a museum or tourist attraction, again, you need to check the individual sites. I think I would pick some place that will most likely promise snow, like Garmisch.
Where ever you do decide to go, you should make hotel reservations soon. Last weekend I was planning out our winter-break trip and 90%of the places I tried in ski areas are booked. Rooms that are still open are crazy expensive. Apparently I'm not so far ahead as I thought.
