I'm thinking of planning a trip to Belgium over Christmas. We will have a car so able to stay anywhere but obviously prefer some place easy to drive/park. Where would you recommend as a home base?

"Where would you recommend as a home base?" If you'll have a car, it probably doesn't matter where you stay. Although I'm not a fan of driving within cities in Belgium, it's usually not hard to find parking, and your hotel would almost certainly have parking either available on site, or an arrangement with a nearby garage. PS- Check out the "Winterland" carnival/market in Hasselt while you're there.
