We are spending Dec 26-29 in Strasbourg and Colmar. I like to have a day trip plan in case this is too much time. I note the smaller towns Rick mentions in his France book: Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr. We will be using public transit. Any suggestions on which of these, if any, may be worth a visit this time of year? Will they have Christmas markets for these dates? Thanks
You can find the dates of all Christmas markets at www.christmasmarkets.com
Riquewihr is my absolute favorite alsatian town. Any of the towns along the road, Ribeauville, Dambach-la-Ville, etc. are all worth a stop if you've got the time.
Any of those would probably be very pretty around Christmas. However, public transportation to them could be a problem. You could either rent a car for a day or check out the guided tours (if they still run then). One such company is Regioscope at this link: http://www.regioscope.com/?Rpage=english/?Rpage=
Riquewihr is also my favorite small village with Ribeauville and yes they are difficult to get by public transportation. Rent a car is a good idean and it's worth it.
A car would be best to see the small villages. Although, I think that you could find plenty to do in Colmar and Strasbourg in the time frame you list. You don't mention what time you arrive on the 26th or leave on the 29th, but that will factor into how much time you really have there. Have Fun!
