Christmas Eve and New Years Eve in Madrid, what to do?!?!?

My Husband and I are travelling to Madrid and Lisbon for the holiday. We are finding that lots of things are closed. We are hoping for an adventure and we are open minded. Can anyone offer advice on how to spend our time there? Thanks so much!

If you want an adventure, you can count down the New Year in Madrid's Puerta del Sol. The custom is to eat a grape for each strike of the bell and some of the hotels will even leave a cluster (and maybe some cava) for you to enjoy at midnight. We did this about five years ago with our kids. It is crowded but good-natured and may get more rowdy as the night goes on (we left right after midnight). The only attraction that was open the next day was the Zoo. Not sure if this is still the case.
