choosing between two places in the Alps

We have limited time. We are leaving Lugano and we have 4 days to get to France. Which should we visit, the Chamonix area in the Alps or the Berner Oberland area in Switz?

I would ask, where in France are you going to?

I've been to both several times...I would probably choose the Berner Oberland. There is just something about the Lauterbrunnen valley that enchants me every time. However, Chamonix is nice too so you can't go too wrong. When I am here in the USA, I dream of going back to the Berner Oberland. I don't feel that strongly about Chamonix. If you do go to Chamonix, I highly recommed the L'Arve hotel (it is in Rick's France book) as it is reasonable, well located and very nice.

I completely agree with Connie. We've been to both twice, and without question I would choose the Berner Oberland (we stayed in Murren) over Chamonix. The BO is much more beautiful, charming and special. I always dream of going back there.

Hi Judith,

I can't compare the two, as we've only been to the Berner Oberland. We stayed 4 nights in Wengen and it was simply "magical". Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't imagine a more beautiful area.

Judith, haven't been to Chamonix, so can't compare with Berner Oberland. However, I would concur that the Lauterbrunnen valley area is exquisite. Two wonderful towns have been mentioned: Muerren and Wengen. They are on opposite sides of the valley. We stayed in Lauterbrunnen which is between the two and has beautiful views up. It is also slightly larger with likely more eat/sleep options. I would definitely recommend on of the three over Gimmelwald, a favorite of Rick and contributors on this site.

I've been to both and hands down the BO is far better. Chamonix is very dramatic, but there is just so much more to see and do in the BO.

i have not been to the Chamonix area, but having been to the Berner Oberland I would find it hard to believe that any place on earth is better for viewing mountains and getting that "magical" feel that the other posters have referred to.

I have been to both (Lauterbrunnen twice), and I would highly recommend the Lauterbrunnen Valley. It is "magical" as one of the comments mentioned. I did enjoy Chamonix, but Lauterbrunnen is my first choice.

I liked Chamonix very much but not as good as I liked the Berner Oberland.

Been to Chamonix once, Berner Oberland six times --

The Berner Oberland gets my vote.
