Considering a trip to Vienna and of course the coffeehouse experience is a big part of it. Only problem: coffee is one of about three flavours that I find truly unbearable even in very dilute form. I know you can get chocolate cakes as the Kuchen part, but I've been searching on line and that's all I can find. Do Viennese cafes also serve decent hot chocolate (I really like the fantastic stuff you get in some cafes in Belgium)? And is it a time-of-day thing, like in France where chocolate is often seen as a specific breakfast or late-afternoon drink? Any recommendations for a Viennese cafe with really good drinking chocolate?
Sorry not to answer you directly, but Vienna can't be better than at Angelina in Paris: http://www.angelina-paris.fr/#/Histoire-du-Chocolat-chaud/
We spent 5 days in Vienna in September. I had some of the best hot chocolate at the Cafe Central located in the Palais Ferstel. The cafe itself is beautiful IMO but we found the food, and especially the desserts, to be very good. http://www.palaisevents.at/en/cafecentral.html
You should be able to get hot chocolate in most coffee houses and cafe's. My kids often order it and tell me it is very good.
The best hot chocolate that I had in Vienna was at the tea room in Schonbrun Palace. Not a huge fan of Sacher Torte but the Sacher and Demel Cafes are worth a visit.
"Sorry not to answer you directly, but Vienna can't be better than at Angelina in Paris" I don't know, it could be. Angelina, after all, is the daughter of an Austrian emigrant.
Angelina's in on my list for my next trip to Paris, though...
I, too, don't care for coffee and was able to get pretty good hot chocolate at every cafe I visited in Vienna (Cafe Halwecka, Cafe Sacher, Cafe Central, and Cafe Demel.)
Thank you, everyone.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demel , when I went years ago a man in a tuxedo greats you and asks you what you feel like eating (chocolate, fruit, etc) and drinking, then he escorts you to all the treats in the case and explains your choices and helps you select. Delicious.
