We are thinking of spending a week in the Alsace-Lorranie region with our 6 year old daughter. We will likely stay in one place and we will have a car. Any good ideas for child friendly activities?
The Eco-Musee at Ingelsheim is a great place to wander through, they have imported old buildings from around the area. Some displays, including wagon rides behind big farm horses, storks on the roofs, and a fantsatic indoor carousel (with pigs, horses and elaborate chariots) which is extremely popular with the school kids from the surrounding area. When we were there they were also bringing in some old-time fairground rides. There are also a few other carousels sprinkled around . The kids on the carousel count down to starting in french- so your daughter could be fluent when she finally gets back home.
When are you guys going? There's a lot of kid stuff in the region, but it's seasonal. I'd highly recommend getting Cynthia Harriman's book, "Take Your Kids to Europe." She has a lot of kid-friendly recommendations for that region, including Monkey Mountain and the Stork Refuge. Won't find those listed in other books. Seriously, there's a mountain there that's just covered in Monkeys. We were there off-season, though, so we didn't get to go in, just saw the monkeys climbing all over it. We took our son to Haut Koenigsburg. It's a beautiful castle that you can roam around as you like.
