A group called Paris walks meet on certain corners on given days and charge a minimal amount for a few hour tour. This will be our 1st time in Paris and were looking for an inexpensive tour guide for some general info just to get my bearings. Has anyone done things with these people. I know they have more thorough tours as well. So is this just a sales pitch?

Hi Erwin,
... Two links, above.
ParisWalks is a great guide to the old, relatively small part of Paris which has intense touristic interest. You could self-guide your visit with this book and a little preparation. Your public library may even have a copy.
... The second link is Tom's Guide to Paris. This on-line guide contains suggestions of areas to investigate. If you have unanswered questions, just click on "Contact Me" and email Tom to ask.
Bon Voyage..P
Erwin, A friend and I did the ParisWalks Da Vinci Code walk in 2006. The guide was an American student attending university in Paris, and this was her way of earning some spending money. It was a very small group that day so along the way during the "official" tour, she also took us past some of her favorite shops and restaurants on the Left Bank. For a quick, thorough introduction to Paris I would definitely recommend them.
