As slow travelers we usually stay in an apartment but as we are only going to the Loire for 3 nights I thought a room would be more suitable. We will have a car so it doesn't really matter where. Any suggestions?
There is a low cost chain hotel based out of France. www.accorhotels.com. Etap or Formule one are very low cost ck website for your location. we stayed at Etap in Blois. It was within walking distance of a lot to see and parking was free.
It isn't cheap, but this may be perfect for self-described "slow travelers." In September, we stayed 3 nights at a fantastic B&B in the heart of the Loire valley, Les Moulins de Vontes (http://www.moulinsdevontes.com). It's a converted mill sitting right out in the middle of the river Indre. The rooms are elegant, and the location is such that you might not want to leave (boats for your use, fishing, hiking, just plain lounging along the river, etc.). We used the B&B for seeing a number of chateaux (Chenonceau, Blois, Cheverny, Villandry) and going to the Wednesday market in Loches. And it's amazing how well you sleep listening to the river rushing by outside your window :)
In late September we stayed in Amboise at Le Petit Clos, rue Balzac #7. Its a B&B, breakfast is optional.
A great association of small family-run hotels is the Logis de France.
Their properties are in small, rural towns that are easily accessed by car. Many run their own restaurants. Most operate rooms in the 2-star range.
La Roseraie Hotel in Chenonceux is a lovely place to stay. Very friendly owners, excellent food, great ambiance. You don't specify what you mean by "cheap," but this place is worth the money. You can walk to Chenonceu; Clos de Luce and Loches (or was it Chinon--don't have my map out--sorry) are also nearby by car.
My wife and i stayed in a bed and breakfast, Les Hautes Gatinieres, in the town of Rochecorbon in the Loire valley October of 2009 and REALLY liked it. Good food great people and a nice room with a wonderful back yard and swing.
