My partner and his son live near Innsbruck and my daughter and I in Ohio. We will be visiting them for the month of July. Money is tight for us. Does anyone have good ideas on things to do that are inexpensive? Our kids are 8 and 10. Thanks!
You say "near Innsbruck" so I am excluding things in Innsbruck which are described in the Innsbruck chapter of Rick's book, Germany and Austria. Things to do near Innsbruck: Lots of mountain lifts and trails. Innsbruck is surrounded by 150 mountain lifts, over 1000 miles of trails, and 150 hikers thoughts. One lift even goes right out of town. Ask about the details at the local TI. One of these, a funicular, goes to the Alpenzoo.Alpenzoo: the zoo is one of the more popular attractions in Innsbruck (not much competition in the summer) if you have a car, an Alpine side trip to Hinterhornalmthe ski jump You are going to be there long enough so that you will want to get a guidebook that will give you the details for these and other things.
He lives in Mils, which is right outside Innsbruck. We have done the zoo, the jump, crystal factory (ok that was for me!!). We always hike a lot. We can go into Italy or Germany. Any parks, water parks? He isn't as good at planning so I will get the guide book.
Lisa: It sounds like you've done Innsbruck before. In the summer, there's only so much to do. You may want to go into Italy and Germany, but of course that means cost for travel and you said "tight budget." (Sigh)
Here are a few more ideas:
Summer toboggan (Sommerrodel) - several locations in the area. Longest run is in Filzmoos (near Reutte), but we went on one in Switzerland, near Sargans at the Walensee.
Take the train to Jenbach, to the Achensee then up to the Rofan with the gondola. Great hikes abound. Ferry runs across lake to bucolic Pertisau.
Nearby - Rattenberg (medieval city), Kramsach (Happy Cemetery is a local secret), and the Freiluftmuseum Kramsach nearby (all these outdoor working museums are great for kids).
Also visit the nearby Stubai Valley and take the gondola up to the glacier. Get off the halfway station on the way down and visit the tavern in the valley next door with easy walk down to the parking lot. On weekends you may find live music. You definitely will find lots of cows and goats!
