I've been to Amsterdam several times, but have yet to find a place I like for my first night. All I want is a cheap safe wifi-equipped room close to train or tram, to sleep off jet lag and go for a walk. I'll move to a business hotel on the second day, but the first night comes out of my pocket and I'd prefer to be cheap. Will consider non-Amsterdam locations as long as their are fairly close to the airport.

Try these: RHO Hotel off Dam Square Ibis Hotel connected to Centraal Station
Avenue Hotel halfway between CS and Dam Square.
