Cheap fair from Portland, Oregon to Rota, Spain

What's the cheapest way to get to Rota,Spain, from Portland, Oregon, or Seattle, Washington? I'm assuming a direct flight would be more costly? Any recommendations on airlines to choose as well as cities to fly into and out of to reach my final destination: Rota, Spain.

Thanks.

If you're going soon, like March, the best flights appear to be 1 stops to Madrid with Continental out of PDX ($644 via Newark), or, Delta out of SEA ($582via JFK). Prices will start to shoot up in April & peak in the summer. Lisbon is a bit closer to Rota, but not many flights to choose from and prices are usually higher. Iberia goes to Madrid out of Seattle (via Chicago)& they may have better prices later on.
If you happen to be going to see someone at the US Naval Station in Rota and are a family member, check on maybe going 'space'A'; possibly starting at NAS Whidbey Island (free, but may take several days to get there).

Tim,

Thank you for your information. Yes, I do have a son in the military; however, it has to be immediate family--his wife/kids--vs. parents, according to my husband's understanding to take advantage of military air travel. We will be heading to Rota June 16, so we're definitely going to be looking at higher fares. If we were to fly into Madrid, we'd still be a distance from Rota. Would you suggest a hop from Madrid, or alternative transportation?

Continental has a flight from Portland to Malaga for €581 (I picked the dates 10/3 - 7/4 just for kicks.) Same dates arriving in Madrid was €485. I think that Malaga is by far your best bet, but in time and in expense/hassle, unless you can get some sort of help from military transport. However, for just a few euros more, you could get a flight to Seville, which is a much easier drive.

I don't think that Rota has any civilian runways, but I know the guys in the tower on base, and you'd be in good hands if your plane were to land there.

Okay, one option for June 16th is with Iberia out of Seattle which can get you to Jerez (XRY) via Chicago & Madrid. Jerez de la Frontera is just 30 minutes up the road from Rota and current cost shows to be $1612. Another option would be to fly to Seville (SVQ) which is an hour further away from Rota, Iberia's cost showing $1548. Sevilla is one of Spain's most beautiful cities & well worth a visit. Check Iberia's website for schedules.

We were able to find two tickets from Redmond, Oregon, to Frankfurt, Germany, on United for less than $520 (including fees and taxes) per person, for travel in April. We plan to travel from Frankfurt to Spain via train, but if you want to quickly get to Rota, I'd first search for reasonable fares to anyplace in Spain or nearby countries in Europe (kayak.com is my favorite), then search ryanair.com or similar sites for a flight to Spain from that location.

U.S. Airways has RT flights from SEA to Paris in June for $721 (found searching Kayak.com). You could then catch a cheap Ryan Air or Easy Jet flight from Paris to a nearby city in Spain.

I used skyscanner.com
Leaving on 06/16 return on 05/24 from PWM to Madrid $715 each way on US Airways.

Cory,

Rachel wants to travel in June. Airfares in June are much higher than in April.

i am in new york....
depending on your interest, fly into Madrid, Barcelona or Malaga (southern spain, close to Rota).
try Delta or American.
i am going to Jerez de la Frontera (in the province of Cadiz where Rota is) to take a flamenco dance course. flying to madrid 23 feb. the ways to travel to Cadiz from Madrid are:
*by taking an eight-hour bus ride from Madrid through beautiful rolling hills of olive trees, etc.
*
RENFE (the railroad network) DOES NOT go to Jerez. it does go to Cordoba or Sevilla and you can take a 'cercanias' (short-trip) bus from there;
*
*Iberia Air has a a round-trip Madrid > Jerez for ONLY 40 euros!!!!

Virginia, Sorry, but you may have gotten some rotten information. RENFE does indeed go to Jerez, 15 times per week day from Seville, 2 times a day, directly from Madrid; according to their website. What might be confusing you is the use of "cercanias", which means a regional or short range train, not a bus.

I, too, am looking to get to Rota, going on a Tiger Cruise with my daughter. (She's the one in the Navy!)My total airfare from LA to Madrid then Rome to LA is 965.00 on American Airlines. The only tricky part is getting from Madrid to Rota. It looks like the train is the best option at this point.
