Chatelet Les Halles/Rue Pierre Lescot

We rented an apt. on Rue Pierre Lescot. Since it was a last minute trip decision we took the first apt. we could find and now I am a little stressed about the area! Everywhere I read it says it is not a safe area and I am travelling with my children!!! Does anyone have any comments? I am looking for honesty!! I know I will get it here! Thanks so much!

I have been in that area many times. It is absolutely fine. I have never felt afraid.

There is a man who lives in Paris and posts regularly on the Lonely Planet Thorntree board. I always find his insights to be very helpful. I sent him a PM and got this response:

There's nothing wrong with rue Pierre Lescot except for nighttime noise maybe -- it is a super busy pedestrian area 24/7 directly across from the Forum underground shopping mall and the big RER/metro transfer stations. Some of the most elegant cafes of central Paris are there--the Au Pere Tranquille, the Bon Pecheur, and the Au Pere Fouettard. Anyway it is super convenient walking or taking public transportation anywhere in Paris. If I were a tourist, I would jump on a location like that in a heartbeat.

And for anyone worried about security, there is a police station right there on rue Pierre Lescot directly across from the main shopping mall entrance.

I think the "unsafe" comments refer to Les Halles at night in the underground shopping areas...other than that, no problem...it's just a central, bit noisey, not boring area....Check this website: www.insecula.com
