We have made quite a few visits to Paris and have seen the typical attractions so are looking for new adventures. Just read about this chateau which appears easy to reach on the eastern edge of Paris. Can anyone comment and is it worth a visit? We will have eight days but want to spend our time wisely.
Easy to get to, the most castle-like of the chateaux, most of the restoration is maybe less than two hundred years old, military museum if you like that sort of thing. Not sure if it would really be worth a half day unless you're running out of ideas. Not the palatial estate type of chateau found in the Loire.
I'm not a fan of chateaux, but have seem most and been inside a good many (including Vincennes). In my mind the best are in the lower Loire valley with one exception: Fountainbleu. If you've never been to a single one, go there. I would rank it above Versailles in splendor and certainly way, way above in historical significance. But, then, that would be pretty much of an all-day excursion. Personally, I'd look for something else to do than visit any of them.
Susan, visiting Chateau Vincennes is on my list for my next trip to Paris. It is so easy to get to: take Metro Line 1 and get off at the end ! We have frequently stayed in the Place de la Nation area and even though that makes us about halfway there, we still managed to find other things to do and see. If you go, I hope you will report back.
