We're thinking of dropping our rental car off in Chartres and take the train into Paris the next morning. Has anyone done this? Thoughts? Any suggestions for a convenient and good place to stay in the center of Chartres? Thanks

For a place to stay, try Hotel Chatelet:
The hotel sits within a 10 minute walk from the cathedral. Also, ample parking in the back.

Le Grand Monarque, a 16th C coaching inn at the heart of the city, you can eat there too. Not cheap (you said good).
