Guten tag- We would like to incorpoate a charming, cultural city(or 2) to our travels in western Austria (Vorarlberg region), this fall. We have already experienced Salzberg. We are really open....no plans or flight, yet. Danke! Patsy
You need to be more specific about what you mean by "metropolis."
A major, interesting city....cultural center.
The only two towns large enough that you could even remotely consider "cities" in Vorarlberg are Bregenz and Feldkirch. Even though it sits on the shores of the Bodensee, "charming" is not a word I associate with Bregenz. Feldkirch is a little more cozy, but only marginally so. Nearby Vaduz looks more like a suburb of Munich or Cologne than the capital of an independent country. If you're looking for a true metropolis, the closest would be Innsbruck and Zurich. EDIT: According to Wikipedia, Dornbirn is actually the largest town in Vorarlberg. I've never stopped there, but from a drive-by on the autobahn, it looks fairly industrial.
The only places that qualify as cultureal cities in Western Austria are Innsbruck, Bregenz (although it's not really charming) or then, only 30 mins from Bregenz... Lindau (which technically is in Bavaria).
