Wow this place came highly recommended by a friend, then I saw it in the book. I looked on this site for info but everyone seems to hate the owners for their rudeness. But most posts were from 09. Has anyone tried it recently. we are only spending 3 nights in Paris ( I know it is not enough but we have a major trip and that will sum it up)
We have stayed at this hotel twice in the last 2 years and have really enjoyed our stay. We have not experienced the rudeness that other people have reported on. The hotel is inexpensive for Paris and is quite charming. We would definitely stay here again next time in Paris. I don't know when you are going but this hotel does book up early. Also, if you don't get an answer to an email, call them. Have a wonderful trip.
We stayed there this past May and had a wonderful stay. The desk staff were very helpful. We are trying to book again for this spring. Never experienced or saw any rudeness at all Paul
We are photographers and travel regularly to France. We always begin and end our stay with the Gourdals at the Champ de Mars. It is a wonderful little French hotel and the Gourdals are very nice. We have been staying there for almost 15 years and would highly recommend it. It does book up months and months in advance. It does have a tiny elevator, but no air conditioning. We were there October and November 2011 and there were new mattresses, wall coverings, carpeting.
Perhaps they've shaped up after so many negative reviews. I considered staying there this past March and actually had a reservation. But after reading negative upon negative upon negative, I decided to cancel and stay directly across the street at the Hotel du Cadran which gets many many positive reviews. Consistency is what I'm looking for, and I didn't really want to take a chance with arriving on one of their (Hotel Champs de Mars) negative days.
We stayed at this hotel in May 2011 and did experience the rudeness. I don't expect sarcasm from the owners since I am there as a guest. We booked way ahead and requested a twin bedded room. Our room was tiny with a double bed which had to be pushed against the wall to create enough space to walk around. This would have been fine for one person but not pleasant for the person sleeping at the wall to have to climb over the person (me) sleeping on the outside. The owners prefer that you do not sit in the reception area unless you are waiting for taxi/shuttle. Would not stay there again but admit the room rate is good and the hotel is attractive.
If you look up the hotel on Trip Adviser you will see 99 percent wonderful reviews and many of the folks, like us, have been there 5,6,or even 10 times. There is a reason they sometimes book up 6-12 months in advance.
We experienced the owners rudeness as well at the Champs de Mars. I don't go on vacation and spend a lot of money to get there to be treated rudely by hotel owners. I have read many, many negative reviews of them over the years. Not about the hotel, but the owners. I think they're popular and booked up 6 mos or so in advance because their price is on the low side for that area of Paris and because of Rick Steves. There are lots of wonderful hotels in Paris. Hotel de l'Avre is less expensive, a few blocks away, and the owner is really nice and treats everyone with kindness and respect. I highly recommend Hotel de l'Avre.
We stayed at the Champ du Mars this past July and would definately go back and stay there again. The owner was fantastic and very friendly. You cannot beat the location. The hotel is still under renovation and we stayed in a room that had not been renovated yet. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean. That is all we needed since most of our time was out wandering the beautiful city. Once the renovation is complete, expect the rates to rise! :)
Maybe they don't like the name Susan?
Ha :-) But it sounds like they dislike more than just Susans of the world. When you've got somebody like RS advertising for you, who needs to practice MANNERS any more? I completely agree with previous posters in that there are MANY MANY MANY good little hotels around. Don't confine yourself to the 1 hotel that happens to treat the "millionaire travel-book writer" with all niceties and manners.
