I am planning to go 3 days to that part of France mid September, Do you know about good value double accomodations under 80 Euros either Reims or Epernay? & some suggestions of Champagne Houses to visit & what other suggestions for this 3 days
My husband and I stayed in Reims one night and stayed at the Grand Hotel Continental, which was clean and relatively inexpensive (fall 2006). We visited Taittinger and Piper Heidsieck for champagne tours. Both tours were fun and include champagne tastings. Rick is exactly right when he describes the tours in his book: the Taittinger tour is upscale and dignified; Piper Heidsieck is Disney-esque. But if you've already had a few glasses of champagne, it's quite amusing.
However, I can't say I recommend Reims. Other than the champagne houses and the cathedral, we didn't find much to see there. The city itself is not picturesque compared to other French cities and doesn't lend itself to meandering strolls, as you might in Paris. We wished we had looked into Epernay and that we'd had time to drive in the countryside.
