Chamonix: Montenvers train closed in October - other options?

We are visiting Chamonix for a day trip from Annecy in October. The plan was to take the gondola from Chamonix up to Aiguille du Midi and then back down to Plan Aiguille du Midi, hike the Grand Balcon Nord, visit the Mer de Glace, and take the Montenvers train back to Chamonix. However, I just read that the Montenvers train is closed while we are there. Not sure if the Mer de Glace is also. Is there an alternate way to get to Chamonix from Montenvers? Thanks in advance!
