We are planning a driving trip in France for May 2008. Does anyone know whether it makes sense to go to Chamonix in May for sightseeing, or is there too much snow? If we go, we would like to take the lift to Aiguille du Midi. We do not plan to hike, just enjoy the views. Our alternative would be to stay in Annecy instead. Any advice would be appreciated!
We were in Chamonix in June, '05, and there was no snow anywhere except high up in the Alps, which includes Aiguille du Midi. We loved Chamonix! We've also been to the Berner Oberland. We loved them both but we actually liked Aiguille du Midi much more than the peaks in Berner Oberland. Chamonix is wonderful and charming. I doubt there will be any snow in town in May. When we were there it was actually in the 80's and the mosquito's ate us alive, but we still loved it. I highly recommend Chamonix. We'll be going back ourselves next July. Enjoy!
We were in Chamonix in early May of this year and there was no snow in the town. Just the higher elevations. We took the lift to Aiguille du Midi and of course there was much snow at the top and cold but beautiful. A worthwhile trip. We actually stayed in Aosta, Italy and drove to Chamonix and found it(Chamonix) to be a charming town. It would have been nice to base there for a couple of nights.
Thank you both so much. That is very encouraging - we'll plan on staying in Chamonix. Lane, you mentioned that you drove from Italy. We will be driving from the Nice area to Chamonix. Per viaMichelin, it takes much less time to drive through Italy, but is a lot more expensive. Any advice on whether to drive the longer, cheaper route through France or the shorter, expensive route through Italy. Thanks!
Sorry Barbara but I am not sure which way to advise you. It does get expensive in Italy but I usually look for the fastest route except when taking a leisuely sightseeing trip.
If you drive from Chamonix and happen to drive the Mt. Blanc tunnel just make sure you read and obey the speed limit and don't follow too close to the vehicle in front of you. The speed limit is not very fast (70km which is about 43 mph) and what is deemed to be a safe disance for following a vehicle on the open road does not apply in this tunnel. They have many cameras in the tunnel. They had a tragic fire in the tunnel in the 90's so they strictly enforce the limits as they should. 36 Euro for following too close and 36 Euro for exceeding their speed limit. Someone I know really well has a first hand knowledge of this. :)
Good luck.
We are also going to Chamonix in close to the end of May. Does anyone know the best/fastest way to get there via train from Paris? thanks!
Was in Chamonix last June. FANTASTIC little place. And "do" the cable car thing. It's a fantastic sight up there. They even had a town rock concert the night we were there. Wow, some beautiful gals were showing there stuff dancing in the towns square. It was a blast.
Thanks everyone, this is very helpful!
