Chamonix in end Sept ? or other alpine alternatives?

I have 3 days after my parents and I visit Rome and the Amalfi coast. At that point, we would have done the coast, big cities and I wanted to also get some alpine experiences into our iten.

I was thinking of taking the overnight train from Rome to Geneva and then the TGV to annesy and the train to Chamonix. In Chamonix, I am looking forward to the Gondola rides and hiking.

Questions are:
0> Does chamonix live up to the hype for non Skiiers?
1> Is the iten from Rome to Chamonix I described crazy or doable?
2> Will the gondola rides be open around Sept 25th - 30th? I think that might be pushing the open envelope.
3> Are there other convenient alternatives in the french/Italian alps you would recommend for spending 2 days?

Does Chamonix live up to the hype? Yes. Very much so. Look at this cool website with amazing panoramic videos. http://www.chamonix.com/welcome,0,en.html Google the closing dates for the lifts. Some close in early Sept, some don't close. Other will have to give opions on the train route. I would vote for renting a car in Geneva and driving the beautiful route from Geneva to Annecy to Chamonix thru gorgeous mountain valleys.
