I'm driving through the Loire valley enroute to the south and may have only enough time to see either Chambord or Chenonceau, but not both. Any recommendations?
To compare the two:
Chambord looks as spectacular in person as the pictures would indicate, although much of the interior is bare. Chenonceau is smaller, but the interior is fully decorated. Chambord sits on a huge estate. Although Chenonceau's grounds are smaller, its gardens are more elaborate. Finally, Chenonceau lies within walking distance of the delightful village of Chenonceaux, while Chambord hides several kilometers away from the nearest town. So, if I had to chose? I might give Chenonceau a slight advantage. However, if you have a full day, you can easily see both. I'd go with this option, if possible.
Chenonceau hands down. As others have said Chambord is basically just a large Chateau.
However, we found Cheverny to be just as enjoyable as Chenonceau.
I would say the difference is:
Chenonceau...beautiful gardens & river setting
Cheverny.....the hounds & classic artwork.
Thanks, that's very helpful!
You really should try to see both but if you have to choose one, I also vote for Chenonceau. We were there in late March(2001) and the river was very high and dramatically runs under the chateau. There were log fires to chase off the chill and every room had a table with a beautiful floral arrangement. The tea room there is excellent. There is a sort of small barn/lodge full of deer heads. The grounds are gorgeous--formally planted with an orangerie, etc.
