Chambery, France - need info from anyone who has traveled there!

My family of four ( 2 adults, 21 & 14 year olds) is considering getting off the beaten path and taking the train from Torino to Chambery, early August. We will ultimately arrive in Paris for our departure to USA. There is not much info about the area in guide books so if you have any tips about this area please let me know. We will not have a car, we want to continue using trains, busses, bikes, etc. Thanks!

Chambery has a nice town square. Historic buildings and a unique elephant fountain. Bikable for sure. We were there in March (2004) so it was really too cold for much outdoor stuff. There are fishing and boating on the big lake. If you give in and rent a car I'd advise taking the trip up to Annecy. For me, though, one of the highlights of our visit was a drive into the mountains to a convent on a lake. I don't know the name of the convent or which direction it was from Chambery, but the drive and the tour were great. Train from Chambery to Paris was scenic and quick.

Hi Linda,

I spent a summer studying in Chambery, and absolutely loved it.

Using trains, buses and bikes is ideal for Chambery. The town is lovely--small enough to feel quaint, but big enough so there is plenty to do.

There is a beautiful lake and beach--Lac du Bourget--just a short bus ride away from the town center.

Feel free to message me for more information. If you'd like more information, I'll look over my stuff and photos.
