Next month we will be in Hallstatt followed by Prague. We have a little extra time. Should we visit Cesky Krumlov or the Wachau Valley and Vienna before heading to Prague? Which is more worthwhile to see?
Rick covers Cesky Krumlov well in his book. I thought it was superb, but if you don't get tickets to the English tours of the castle or the baroque theater, you could substitute other medieval cities. We thought it was worth the 4 hour drive from Prague and back. You didn't say if you were traveling on your own in a car. Cesky Krumlov (or nearby Czech alternate, "The Three T towns") are each one-day. Vienna should be several days. Vienna (and don't forget Mauthausen) is a major destination. Cesky or the T's are a spare day here or there.
With just one day I would see Salzburg. Goes very well with Hallstatt.
They are both extremely worthwhile... just different. If you like big cities, Vienna... if you like a smaller town/village then Cesky Krumlov. My preference is CK, but I am glad I had a few days in Vienna.
Jamie,
I'd hit Vienna and the Wachau over CK in a heartbeat!! No comparison in my opinion. CK is a cute little town that we felt we only needed a few hours to see. Vienna, on the other hand is magnificient!! I have been there twice and still have so much to see. It is so grand, the cafes and food are fabulous, the vibe is cultured...it is one of my favorite cities in the world. And, the Wachau is just a charming, beautiful little area with super friendly people, excellent food and wine, perfect for relaxing in between cities! If you go out to the Wachau, I'd rent a car to get around to all the little villages and the Melk Abbey.
