Central hotels in Avignon, Lyon and Paris

Hi everyone

I’m looking at hotel options for Avignon, Lyon and Paris (which arrondissement would you suggest?)
I’m looking for 3/4-star hotels. My 4 criteria are:
- free wifi
- central location

- a/c
- preferably with elevator
I’ve had a couple of recommendations so far: Hotel La Residence in Lyon, and in Avignon, Hotel d’Europe and Hotel Colbert.
I have no experience with apartments.

Thanks

We've stayed at the Hotel Colbert in Avignon. Very nice and reasonably-priced hotel. No elevator. We stayed on the 3rd floor. There was Wi-Fi but as I recall, there didn't seem to be a lot of bandwidth. They did have A/C or a window system as I recall. They have breakfast but it was not included for our rate. It was extra. Wonderful owners. Nicely located. About 3-4 blocks from the train station. If you have rental car, you are about 200 feet from a large underground parking garage (don't try to park on the nearby streets).

I agree with Larry regarding Hotel Colbert. I stayed there in July 2012 and would go back. One thing to watch out for: if you get the room on the top level (mansarde), be careful not to bump your head. After a couple bumps, you'll learn to avoid the beam and it won't be a problem. (The owner joked with me about this and said it happens to everyone) It was extremely hot in that room if you turn off the a/c. I like to turn off the a/c at night because I'm a light sleeper and the noise bothers me, but I did manage to get a good night`s sleep as the hotel is on a quiet side street. I would stay in the same room again now that I know the tricks!

I know that you asked for central location, however, I will offer an alternative in Avignon that is not central. It is the Best Western, located at the TGV station. If you arrive/depart via TGV, it is very convenient. The primary car rental agencies are located there. It is a very modern hotel with elevators, air conditioning, and - when we were there in 2006 - an extensive, included breakfast buffet. It is ideal for exploring other towns in Provence by car as it has extensive free parking. To get to Avignon proper, there is a 1 euro bus which leaves from a block away and takes about 10 minutes.
