Travelling for a month in France beginning in three weeks, we need to be able to keep in tough with one another--for very short calls. Our current cell phones do not work in Europe; what is the most cost-effective way to accomplish? Rend a phone, prepaid phones, ??? Please advise
Nancy, I wouldn't suggest renting a phone, as that's about the most expensive and least cost effective method. You have a number of choices: > Buy two PAYG Phones when you arrive in France. These will likely come with a small airtime credit and provide the best rates for calls within France. The cost for calls back to the U.S. will probably depend on which plan you choose at the time of purchase. Be sure you're clear on the method for "topping-up". > Buy two "travel Phones" from one of the firms that offer these, such as Cellular Abroad, Roam Simple, Call In Europe, Telestial or Mobal. The rates will be slightly higher than a "local" phone, but will be consistent if you venture outside of France. These usually operate on a "post paid" basis, with calls charged to a credit card, so no "topping up" is necessary. One advantage of these phones is that you'll have them before you leave, and they'll be ready to go as soon as you step off the plane. > If your current Cell phones are with Verizon check with them regarding their "travel phones", which can be obtained for periods of up to a month AFAIK. These will be more expensive than the previous two options, but not excessively so if used sparingly. The absolute cheapest way to keep in touch is via text message, as sent texts are usually only about 50¢, and received texts usually FREE. Happy travels!
Thanks, Ken. I think we'll buy the PAYG phones and extra airtime. I appreciate your help! Nancy
In France at Orange stores (a mobile phone company) I purchased a Bic phone (Bic, like the pencils) for about 30EUR and then pay as you go minutes. Renting a phone can be a hassle. At least with these it's yours and the next time you travel you can just buy another SIM card.
If it's an iPhone I use text package. That's a great rate. or if you can get on a free wifi use skype and text back and forth for free all you want!
@Le Nogentais We're travelling to Paris soon and planning to purchase a cell phone to use there (much cheaper than using my Verizon account). I've come across info about the Bic Phone. What was your experience with it? We just want a basic phone for calls & text. Thanks for any insight.... D. Johnson

My experience was perfect with it. I lived in France for a little over a year, and it served my purpose during that time, I was able to text in and out of the country. Plus you can refill your minutes just by sending a text of the last 4 digits of your credit card. It couldn't be any easier to use. It's perfect for the traveler.
