Recommendations on what kind of cell phone is best cost wise to use in Spain, Portugal and MOrocco. Can I use my Verizon Iphone for calls and use all my apps or should I buy a phone with set minutes when I get to Spain. Thanks, Anne
Anne, It would NOT be a good idea to use your "Apps" if that involves accessing the cellular data network, as data roaming charges can be VERY expensive. For an example, have a look at the other Thread in the "General Europe" section regarding "the risks of travelling with Smarthphones". Using your "Apps" in Europe may not be a concern, as I believe the Verizon iPhone is CDMA only, so it won't even work in Europe. I'm not certain, but you should be able to use it where you have access to Wi-Fi. That would provide some limited internet access. You might have a look at the websites for the "travel phone" firms such as Call In Europe, Roam Simple, Cellular Abroad, Telestial and Mobal for determine if one of their plans might work for you? These will provide a consistent rate structure for Spain and Portugal, however Morocco may be in a more expensive "zone". The problem with buying a phone in Spain is that while it will provide inexpensive calls there, when you use it in Portugal and Morocco you'll be "roaming" and the costs will increase. Good luck and happy travels!
Unless you have a GSM/CDMA phone from verizon, most people on Verizon just have CDMA, which is useless in europe. i'd say you get the cheapest GSM quad band phone you can find - plenty on the internet and just buy a sim card when you get there. But, if you're inspird to get a good phone, you can stop by Verizon's store and they'll tell you which one to get. However, you should forget about your apps when you're on vacation...
