I will be traveling in Europe this summer with a family member. We will be going to the Netherlands, UK, France, Switzerland, and Italy. I would like to be able to use a cell phone for emergencies and to communicate with friends in Europe while we are traveling. I currently have a very basic cell phone with T-Mobile here in the U.S. What do you recommend I do for using a cell phone on our trip without it costing me an arm and a leg? Any advice would be most appreciated.

Lizanne, As you already have a T-Mobile Cell phone, one option you could consider would be to just "roam" with your normal Cell phone. A "very basic cell phone" will work fine in Europe, however you'll need to ensure that it's a quad-band model, equipped with the European frequency bands. You'll also have to check with T-Mobile regarding the cost of roaming. I haven't checked, but they probably have roaming plans available which will reduce the costs somewhat. If you use text messaging as much as possible, the costs will be very reasonable. Sent texts are usually in the range of 75¢ each, while received texts are usually FREE. If you decide to travel with your home Cell phone, it would be a good idea to check the Charger to ensure it's designed for "world operation". You will of course need Plug Adapters as well. You won't be able to use the Mobal SIM (or any other) unless your phone is also unlocked. Happy travels!

Look at previous posts....many on this subject. We were loaned a global phone through Verizon and it worked perfectly. I hear you can purchase them cheaply in Europe...phones with limited minutes but, again, I'd look at older posts for more info.

The only drawback with Mobal is that it doesn't work in Japan.
