CDG-Paris: RER vs. GoldenAir

Can anyone recall whether the RER + Metro method of getting from CDG to the Republique area of Paris involves schlepping luggage up or down many steps, or are there escalators? (I realize they are sometimes not running.) Does the 8,60 euro tkt cover the transfer, or is there an additional ticket from Gare du Nord (or LesHalles?) Has anyone received a RS discount from Golden Air? How much? I know a shuttle is easier; but sometimes the traffic is an issue. Thanks for any recent experiences.

Sorry, I don't know about escalators. The fare from CDG is 8.20€ and includes unlimited transfers (RER and/or Metro) so long as you don't exit the system.

Hi Jean--I don't know about the escalators, but I have used Goldenair and gotten the Rick Steves' discount. There were four in our party, so we paid 17 euro per person(plus tip)which is a 2 euro per person discount. It's hard to imagine how taking the train and metro would not be cheaper, but I did appreciate being dropped right at the door and not having to schlepp bags! It was an incredibly easy, comfortable, and stress-free way to get to and from the airport.

Yes, I booked Golden Air online and got their RS discount too. I have used them a few times now and like them. The amount of traffic you encounter doesn't effect the cost of the trip -- just the length of time. I too don't desire to schlep bags on the RER after a long overseas flight, no matter how cheap or "convenient" it might be.

I don't recall many steps the two times I have flown into Paris and taken the RER and Metro into the city. The last time was in 2005. In both cases, I DID use the shuttle to get back to CDG from the city because of the early flight. It was worth the peace of mind on the return. Coming into the city, save the money and take the train. If you are traveling light, it shouldn't be a problem at all.
