Will be staying in Munich for several days late September. Have an interest in seeing Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle south of the city.
Not much for bus tours. Would love to take public transport and get there early in the morning before tour buses start rolling up. But is that easily doable (without a car and no knowledge of German language)? Easy to use public transport to get there? Or shoudl we just bite the bullet and take a tour bus??
Getting to the castles on you own is easy and a lot less expensive than the bus tours which add little but cost. See my webpage. If you go on a weekend day, you can use a Bayern-Ticket (Single 22€, €26 for 2P) for the round trip train to Füssen and the bus to and from Hohenschwangau. If you go on a work day, you cannot use the Bayern-Ticket before 9 AM, so you might want to buy point-point tickets if you want to arrive early. In September, the ticket center opens and they start selling tickets at 9 AM. The first train of the day leaves Munich Hbf at 4:48, and the connecting bus gets to Hohenschwangau at 7:30. The next train leaves at 6:51, getting you to Hohenschwangau at 9:13.
You might want to read the reviews of the castle tour. I really wanted to see Neuschwanstein, but the reviews weren't very good. Apparently, the tours are pretty short and you don't get to see very much. Check it out and decide for yourself. On the other hand, you can go to Nymphenburg Palace on the outskirts of Munich by way of a very pleasant tram ride. The Residenz in Munich is the best deal in all of Germany. Seeing the Palace takes a whole day (you can break for lunch and re-enter with your ticket). They give you what looks like an old cell phone that contains an English language tour (included in ticket). Treasury ticket is extra - worth seeing. Theatre ticket extra - not really worth it.
