Castles and small towns, Austria, Bavaria, Switzerland

Hello there! I am planning a trip for 3 students and we have Eurail passes for Germany, Switzerland, and Austria (that we received for free so don't feel too guilty using or not using depending on the situation!). My questions are: 1)I keep reading that people say NO to Neuschwanstein, just because it is such a hassle to wait, and it is super touristy. Suggestions for other castles/palaces? I have seen Ludwigsburg and Hohenzollern (in Baden-Württemberg, but we kind of wanted to explore Bavaria) and have read about Linderhoff, Hellburnn, Herrenchiemsee castle(?).. 2) Basically I am wondering about other towns that are worth visiting for a day or just stopping or even staying in overnight that are near (within 2 hours) Munich and Salzburg.
3) Anyone ever been in Tripsdrill theme park? Someone recently just mentioned it to me so I thought I'd ask! Thanks!

Haha very true. Well whether or not we decide on Neuschwanstein, having other castle options is also very helpful as hopefully we will see more than one! :)

Thanks, I JUST found it through Google right when you posted that. :-) Is it accessible by train? It only gives directions for cars, but I'm still searching..

with Neuschwanstein you can also visit HohenSchwangau. Near Salzburg is Werfen (also site of ice cases !!!!)

Just went to Neuschwanstein two days ago. Personally, I think it was worth it. The views are wonderful. We used the website "Ben's Baurenhof" to find a wonderful farm in Unken, Austria for our B&B. Wish I could describe the beauty. Unken is 30 min. from Salzburg and 30 min. from Berchtesgaden. Hope you have as much fun as we are currently having on our 3 week tour.

'People' don't say NO to Neuschwanstein...only 'some people' with a really strong negative opinion of THEIR experience, and assume all others will have the same experience. I had traveled many times to Germany and never made it there, but finally took my 10 year old grandson there because he loves castles and we had a great time. Maybe I have really low expectations and I couldn't care less if it was old, or new, or a castle or a palace or a hollywood movie-set. It was stunningly beautiful and the walk down the hill through the woods was one of our most memorable experiences. To all those who tell you not to visit it...they did. And there are hundreds of tourists who enjoy it every day. I would never avoid going someplace I might want to visit simply because a few nay-sayers couldn't find its redeeming qualities. You are still going to both Salzburg & Munich? Lots to do in both those places...so if you want a little variety of a small village I would just pick some random place on the map and explore...that's how I have found many of my favorite places ...Mitterfels, bad Groenenbach
Dinkelsbuhl. Sounds like a wonderful trip.
