we are doing a self drive trip on the French Canal du Midi between Castlenaudary and Homps and are looking for suggestions for places to stop, good dinners and lodging before and after the cruise.
Rick does not cover that area in detail. Because of that and because this relates to a very specific location not well covered in the guidebooks, a good resource is ViaMichelin.com, input a town name in the area of interest, then when the map of it comes up, look for the box to check for Restaurants or Hotels, and it will give you the Michelin picks in that area.
Renting a self-drive houseboat is one of our favorite things to do as apart of our trips to Europe. We have not done the Canal du Midi yet... but have done research and it it on our list of things we would like to do. There are some wonderful canal boating guides to plan of where to stop and eat, (We also filled out water tanks for showering, etc. every other day, and they are marked on the maps) . What boat place are you renting from? Have you done canal boat rentals before? I prefer one-way rentals and going downstream if possible. It is easier to work the ropes in the locks. If available, be sure to get bikes on the boats too.
Thank you so much for your suggesion. I will go to the web site. I just found Rick Steve's web site and it is terrific.
Thanks again, Carole
